I called the smog guy, and he said "come on over", so I went on over.  After sitting in the waiting room for 45 minutes, I went out to see how he was getting on - he couldn't find the evap cannister.  I had no idea what he was talking about, and he couldn't explain to me what it did, and he was aiming to close so we bailed on it for the evening.  When I got home, I looked at the evap diagram that's in the engine bay, and found that he's (probably) talking about a charcoal cannister that plugs in to the fuel pressure regulator.  I followed the hoses out of the fuel pressure regulator and found the charcoal cannister after a brief search under the rear wheel arch.  Oh well, I can now go back again some time :o)
