I finally managed to get the laptop working correctly, after several attempts at deleting the drivers and rebooting - Windows just reloaded the incorrect drivers, then wouldn't let me overwrite them with older ones.  Safe mode couldn't see both graphics cards, so it wouldn't let me load the drivers.  Sheesh.  I managed to interrupt the driver install and get the old, old drivers on there, and I'm leaving it at that and calling it good.
