In the evening, I went and looked at the van, as I'm trying to yank a new wire through.  I found a connector that doesn't appear in the manual, and pulled the new wire through to it.  Want to bet that's the cause of the problem?  Well, I'll have to solder new wires and stuff there when I'm feeling more up to it - this is now all happening in the cramped engine bay.
